Chapter 2

Y314 was getting rid of old memories and stumbled upon the last entry in one of his journals, dated Dec 23, 2013.

"As before, it is time again to evolve.

The nomads speak of people from the west who spoke differently from the people who were here before. I do not know how we spoke before they came. Today, there is no difference between those who came and us. I don't even know if I am not one of them.

I wonder if the people from the west taught us about the gods. If I tell anyone that there was a time when we did not know about gods, it will not make sense to them. As far as we know, the gods created us. So there can't be such a time when according to our people, we did not know about gods. I had no such thought either until one day I saw a boy....

It was at a temple. The boy's mother was asking him to pray. Children imitate those who are around them even before they speak coherently. I think the meanings behind their own actions gets revealed to them gradually, in a series of epiphanies. I remember a few of my own. I do not remember what the boy actually did but I wondered if the boy knew about the gods. Did I know when I was born? No. Didn't my parents teach me? What if this boy never understood the idea of a god and never taught his children? Will god disappear?

Another day, another temple. A story from the scriptures was being enacted by some children. I wondered why a child posing as a God was instilling such feelings in the gathering. It was just like any other story otherwise. That's when it dawned on me. It was simultaneously a device,"

That is where the entry abruptly ended. One would expect to remember the last part of almost anything but that was a period when he was easily distracted. Journals were a chore. If he had completed that sentence, he thought, it would not have been anything exceptional but now he was a little curious. "... simultaneously a device," and what else? Can that sentence end meaningfully?

He had to put that thought aside. He was not the same person anymore. He had indeed evolved. A different thread of memories took over. That year end was also the time he had first heard about the scrivener. The anonymous writer who seemed to have written for a reader in the distant future, all the while sensing that the world might not look as it did in his time. As if he knew how tantalizing the missing details of the past will be. Only parts of his palmyrah notes have been found. Back then Y314 couldn't afford to wonder about the missing pieces. It didn't matter to him. He told himself that people were people always and they lived a variation of the same themes and left it at that. He wasn't always like this. History had soured in his mouth the more he consumed it.

Now he was feeling a little bored. Maybe he can afford to obsess over the scrivener a little bit. To an extent where it does not turn unhealthy. Set some limits perhaps. Strictly a hobby.

"No", he said aloud and threw the journal into the fire.

Good morning

I saw myself sitting on the couch in the living room, facing the front door. The room was dimly lit with the curtains all drawn closed. Some sunlight still managed to get in. Every detail in the room had some brown or hospital green in it. Quite boring. I was correcting something in the strangely large notebook placed over the coffee table. Not an ideal setting for writing.

I heard her feet shuffling in the bedroom to my front-left, come to the doorway and stop.

"Good morning... ", she trailed off with a yawn, making a feeble attempt at covering her mouth with the back of her hand, slouching a bit as she stood.

I looked up towards her and returned her words, with no intonation.

She stood there for a second longer with sleepy eyes and dragged herself back into the bedroom, tangled hair of shoulder length finding their way back over her ears. I got back to the notebook.

I don't know who she is exactly. This is not our house. Or her's or mine. The writing materials are mine. She looked like someone in particular and also like a few others and once she turned she was just someone. Last night we were walking along a footpath surrounded by trees, with another friend who might now be in a different room. We have not seen each other in years. Her face had changed a bit and looked younger. I remember her falling asleep on the trek. How did that happen? I might have carried her in.

Was I dreaming? I tried opening my eyes and felt the shell. The eyelids were heavy, burning a bit as I had covered my head with a blanket.  Slightly light headed... I might be hungry among other things. Various muscles ached in different ways, indicating the boundaries of my existence.

I might have sighed bit and shrugged as much as one could in that state and went back to sleep.

Dreams

I am not someone who regrets his actions for I usually know exactly why something was done. The closest I come to regrets is in my dreams. Sometimes they seem to last an entire night focussed on one agenda and never fail to highlight something.

I just woke up from one and thoughts are zipping by.

She was one of those doors that opened when another one was firmly closed. Beyond the un-avoided pleasantries, social habits, social media habits and personal habits there has been a definite connection. I doubt it sometimes. But I am quite sure.

She was one of the two people I hung on to when I was turning a corner. I have never felt that way afterwards because I knew what was coming. If she helped me to hold on to life's infinite possibilities then there was a he who showed me, in stark contrast and brutal honesty, death and void. It is one of those paradoxes where they end up being the same - life and death - probably. The "world" and the "void". Don't get me wrong, they are probably equally aware of both world and void... just that they ended up on different sides in my mind.

I knew I would never be able to do anything for her... It just would not work. Mostly because I am incapable. The benefits are doomed to be one way. Or may be there is still a future where it is different. But once again, thanks pal.

The dream is already evaporating. But she remained sophisticated, cracked, stubborn and savvy and the only one who can help herself was herself.... or now that I think about it, anything that she considers a part of herself. She also belongs to a set of two people who can get me completely tongue tied, for different reasons. May be it was a stupid dream or may be it is the quintessential portrait. Either way, it is etched on this dead-end: me... on a note on the ocean, appropriately, but not too far away.

Fading memories

I used to think that I have a very good memory when people were pleasantly surprised by the amount of details I used to recall. It turns out that I was just remembering slightly different things compared to most others. I had a small number of friends at any given time. I used to be like a fossil - old and out dated after whenever people moved on. I moved very slowly through psychological time since nothing much happened for me.

Those memories seem to be fading away now. Perhaps it is facebook? My selective memory is unable to cope up with the sheer volume of digital records. I got in because otherwise I was going to be left behind. It is great that you never have to lose a friend and rediscover old ones but it is almost as if the facebook accounts are friends with each other and do a lot together and you can just watch them go about it. Every account is a celebrity or a broadcast service. There's hardly any connection with the audience.

It perhaps won't be all bad. For now, I feel like an asocial dinosaur suddenly finding himself in the midst of some modern cult gathering.

Moratorium

Felt like writing something about life, love, loss and lack of work and inspiration. But everything seemed too philosophical or manufactured feelings that perhaps don't exist. I guess the universe wants me to keep quiet for a while longer :-) Shall oblige.

a mill, a donkey and tangents

I said 'No' to something which I thought I will never do.
When I have said 'No' to something in the past, I have kept saying 'No'.
When I have declared such things in the past, they stop being true... sometimes.

Is there a special kind of tiredness or laziness that makes you act like a donkey on the mill? Where you can do one thing very well tirelessly but do absolutely nothing else? A strange concoction of fear, indifference, apathy, sadness and... loss... a tendency to be solitary to go with it keep you away from people who are, in a universe of objects ever growing distant, still the closest, outside work.  What excuse can you give for being an absentee 'anything' and still claim to be caring? Is that even a possibility? What if I consider myself imprisoned? Does that work? An average of 8 months spent in a 1Km radius with a brief venture for not more than a few hours into an 8km radius at the end of it must qualify as one? What about someone having to be everything to himself and since some of himself was not feeling up to it? No? Load of garbage? Sounds just about right.

If and when this donkey leaves the mill it will take off on a tangent. I will write about that if it happens.

In moments like this I start feeling like Humphrey Bogart... guess the name of the movie.

People (ha ha) associate with this prisoner in solitary confinement at their own risk.

Saw one such owl recently... in the moonlight.  staring straight at me...T'was surreal

30? 29? 32? 92?

One of those.

A few days more than eight years have passed since the day I secured my first job. My only job. And that's the only thing I have done well at which someone else would acknowledge as such. I have done my best to wipe clean any semblance of normalcy from everything else. I seem to be winning. I am not sure if that is a good thing. I am not a workaholic. It is just that everything else seems be more flawed. In fact, I have hardly ever worked. I just do what fancies me.

I have an elephantine memory for certain things and I am oblivious to some others. Time seems to pass at a different pace as a result. Biology has a clock that runs differently though. You were one of the new kids on the block and now there is a fresh bunch. There were fresh faces earlier too, but now it seems to matter for the first time. All your mentors are disappearing and you have turned into a mentor when you thought you could carry on with your merry freshness forever. Or may be I have just misread things. Stay foolish. Really. I think no one grows up, it is just that others grow up under you, whether you want it that way or not.

I am not a go-getter. I am not a high flyer. I am not many things. I have never intended to be.  " 'I' is a very fluid concept right now". It has been so always. There has never been a definition possible. Not even that it is utterly undefinable. An ego's strength varies only in kind. As for degrees, it has just one. It exists, until death do it done.

If I don't write here there's verbiage elsewhere. But one of these days I will write something really simple, true and pleasant :-)
